various artists - Mojo Presents: Step Right Up!

As Mojo issues go, this was a tough one to beat. I can still remember grabbing this off the shelves at Atomic Books, drawn in by an entire CD curated by Tom Waits. Hell yeah! Even if I only knew about half the artists, I'd still be into it. Definitely worth the high dollar import price.

In retrospect, I'm mad I didn't hold onto the other freebie Mojo Presents CD's that I'd encountered in the wild up to that point. It's not like I was short on space, or one of those "let's sell all my CDs once streaming became a thing" people. Yet I cannot for the life of me recall hanging onto any of that crossed my path until this one. I popped it into the CD player in the Civic, rolled down the windows on one of the first nice days of the year, started singing along with Tennessee Ernie Ford and Ray Charles. I threw it on the stereo at home once I arrived there, jaw agape as I heard Gavin Bryars for the first time, and listened to Burroughs recite a song I'd heard sung by Dietrich. When I reached the end, I was greeted by Cliff Edwards, singing a song I'd known since childhood. It all felt like a blanket of song that had always been there, so long as I was willing to wrap myself in it.

various artists - Mojo Presents: Red Hot & Regal (Kings Of Leon - Roots Friends & Influences)

First things first: how's Kraken working for everyone? I don't ever have issues downloading Kraken-hosted files, but I'm but a singular man. Drop a line in the comments if you have a suggestion for an alternativel The homies have spoken! I'm starting to move over to a new host. Hang tight, friends!

I think Kings Of Leon are corny as hell, but if these are indeed the artists that shaped them, then they have some pretty good taste. There's a lot to like here, and the best part is that "Sex On Fire" won't sneak up on you. I'm partial to the Band and Woody Guthrie; this also got me to drag out/seek out Soledad Brothers records.

And that's how I feel about that. You're welcome to your own opinions, as always. I'M NOT TRYING TO TAKE YOUR POWER AWAY, LISA!

various artists - Jubilation! Great Gospel Performances • Volume One: Black Gospel

Clearly, the universe wanted me to have the first volume of "Jubilation", as this one crossed my hand for the bargain price of three clams. Everything I said in my previous post applies here. Perhaps I'll turn up a copy of Volume Three in the nest month, so I can complete the series?

various artists - Jubilation! Great Gospel Performances • Volume Two: More Black Gospel

It's complicated for me, you know? How Christianity is intertwined in American popular music. But I guess it's important to remember that Satan was a fallen angel. So why wouldn't godly sounds evolve into heathen hymns?

But here's a decent place to start if you want to dig into the roots of soul music. Sam Cooke, as part of the Soul Stirrers, leads things off on this second disc of the three disc "Jubilation! Great Gospel Performances" series. The Staple Singers, whose Stax releases are amongst my favorites, show off their spiritual side on "Uncloudy Day". I knew Mahalia Jackson and James Cleveland before I dove into this, but I heard the Heavenly Gospel Singers, the Davis Sisters, and the Swan Silvertones for the first time on this comp. It's not a regular listen, but I'm glad I opened up to this, you know?

The first volume features other black gospel singers, including Aretha Franklin, the Edwin Hawkins Singers, and Clara Ward (amongst others). The third volume is all country gospel: Johnny Cash, Webb Pierce, George Jones & Tammy Wynette, and the Louvin Brothers all appear. In all, it's a pretty great series.

various artists - Mojo Presents: The Changing Man

There was, up until about 20 minutes ago, a 6 foot tower of boxes, filled with CDs and DVDs, sitting in my living room. I looked up from rolling cigarettes just in time to watch it tip over and crash upon the floor.

I'm avoiding getting up to examine the damage.

Here's a Mojo CD from 2008 that I bought for a dollar a few months ago. It has William Bell, Washington Phillips, Gil Scott-Heron, and Dinah Washington on it. Plus, Paul Weller's the theme..."Rarities & Inspirations" the common bond of these 15 tracks.

I feel like a paraphrase of a "Spinal Tap" line when asked, "don't you already own records with all these songs on it?" "Yeah, but this one was a dollar."

Sigh...I'm going to go clean up now.
